After the Roe v. Wade court decision in 1973, which sentenced millions of babies in the United States to their deaths, Catholic Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen came up with a new way to combat this anti-life movement. He encouraged the spiritual adoption of an unborn child whose life is in danger of being taken through abortion. An individual picks an unknown unborn child and prays for that baby for nine months, becoming the child’s “spiritual parent”. In this way, persons of various religious denominations are able to unite in prayer— one of the most powerful weapons in combating the evils of abortion.
While the spiritual parent does not really know who the child is, God does, and we can trust that our prayers will be directed towards a specific unborn baby. Many have found that the naming of their spiritual child has helped them to focus on the reality of the tragedies of abortion and on prayer.
The spiritual parent is called to pray for the saving of the baby, but also for the child’s biological parents. They pray that the parents may be provided with all the mental, spiritual, and material help they need to choose life for their child and properly care for him/her after birth. In addition to the prayer aspect of spiritual adoption is the educational aspect. Monthly updates will be sent to the participants, outlining the physical development of their adopted child.

Loving Father, Creator of all Life, please spare the life of my spiritually adopted child, (insert name of child here), from abortion. Help his/her parents to understand that their child’s life is of invaluable worth. Through You, Oh God, may they be provided with everything necessary to give birth to their child and to care for him/her. May they be comforted and supported throughout the pregnancy and infancy of their baby. Amen
