Every single person in this world dreams of doing something important. Standing up for a cause. Being a hero. But this desire in our hearts is often squandered by society constantly telling us what and what is not politically correct, and people opposing your views vigorously at every turn. Isn’t it just easier to post cat videos on your feed, and not get involved in anything that might controversial? Yes, it is easier. But I know, in your heart you don’t want to just live an “easy life.” Listen, I’ve been there. I’ve sat on my bed and cried over people who have hurt me with their comments, their hate. But it is all so worth it, so let me tell you about the Pro-Life Movement and why YOU should get involved. 1. You will finally have a voice After years and years of feeling like you have nothing to offer the world, after being told to conform to the world’s standard, after being told to not offend anybody and keep your opinions to yourself, finally, you can speak. You notice the wrong in the world, and you’re ready to speak out against it. This is a movement where young and old have voices, and every voice is heard. 2. You’ll be standing up for something worth fighting for Defending human life. What cause is more noble than this? It is what every super hero ultimately stands for: human life. What is every plot about? Some alien superpower or evil villain threatens to destroy the world, and/or human life. The Superhero doesn’t stop until the villain is killed or banished, ultimately saving all people. He risks his life in the process because he knows that human life is the thing most worth fighting for. You never hear about a superhero(s) saving puppies or the earth from fossil fuels, because we know that fighting for a cause other than human life pales in comparison. Joseph Campbell describes a hero as this: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” You are a hero, you pave the way to freedom, to justice, to life. 3. You are needed Especially if you are young, the Pro-Life movement NEEDS you. We need your talents, your passion. Everybody wants to feel needed, and this movement can put all your talent to use; you’d probably even surprise yourself with hidden talents you never knew you had! One thing I love about the PLM is that there’s a place for everybody. If you’re a talented writer, you can write PL speeches or essays. If you like to counsel/help people, sidewalk counseling may be for you! If you are good with your hands or if you like doing reception work, consider volunteering at your local Pregnancy Resource Center. There is something for EVERYBODY. 4. You will have opportunity Getting involved with the PLM allows you to meet amazing, wonderful, successful people. You’ll feel important, you’ll feel professional. You can rise to a high position with no prior education, just a passion for human life. How awesome is that?! It opens a door to internships, to becoming a regional coordinator, to becoming CEO of National Right to Life. Anything is possible. 5. You will have a community In the PLM, you’ll have people who know you. People who understand you. People who you can reach out to 24/7. People who can answer your toughest questions. Being a part of one of the most controversial movements in the world today can be intimidating, frustrating at times, and even scary. You have to stand up for what you believe in front of scholars, in front of people who demean you with their piece of paper that says “I have a PhD in Women’s Studies, how could you possibly know more than me?” It is very empowering to know that you walk through this with people who support you and come alongside you as well as knowing that you have truth and fact and science on your side. What to do next? You’re ready to get involved, but you don’t know where to start. Here are a few places to begin: 1. If you’re a student, find out who your Students for Life Regional Coordinator is and contact them! They can give you resources and tools and help you get involved in your community and/or school. 2. Contact your local Pregnancy Resource Center and tell them you’d like to volunteer. They’ll be over the moon with joy. 3. Go to a Pro-Life training conference/class and go to Pro-Life events. Contact your Right to Life State Coordinator to find out more! 4. PRAY PRAY PRAY! You’re prayers are needed to defeat this evil. When we come together, evil vanishes. I would like to leave you with this beautiful quote from Harry Potter. Probably my favorite quote in all of the books. “If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. He didn’t realize that love as powerful as your mother’s for you leaves its own mark, not a scar. No visible sign. To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever. It’s in your very skin. Quirrel, full of hatred, greed, and ambition, sharing his soul with Voldemort, could not touch you for this reason. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good.” -Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Did you hear that?? The love for a BABY defeated Voldemort-evil itself- and made him lose his powers. Evil is never a match for love. The more fervently we cherish, love, and stand up for all human life, the larger the chance we have of defeating this evil.
